Borgafjall Trip and Workshop Day 8
February 2, 2009
Monday Feb 2nd 2009
We had a lovely breakfast at the hotel then met Daniel and Olaf, the client, at the site. Chatted about the project and then went tot he planning department to get some drawings. we then went to clarion hotel sign to see what that hotel was like. olaf said its the biggest hotel in stockholm and he wanted a similar program for this tower project. we then went back to get ready to go to the airport. once we got there, our flight was canceled because of the snow shenanigans in london! we stayed at the connect hotel for a night and managed to get onto the afternoon flight the next day!

Borgafjall Trip and Workshop Day 1
January 26, 2009
Monday Jan 26th 2009
We were greeted with a lovely breakfast and went to the conference room that we were going to be using for the rest of the week. Dave, Eva, Tom, Becky, Steve and I presented our work to the owner of the hotel and the owner’s husband. They quite liked my idea of the top center, a cafe/lounge area at the top of the mountain.
After that we did 6 hours of grass hopper which is a rhino plug in to do parametric design. It was quite tricky to get my head around it but was much easier and more visual than GC.

We then had a lovely veal steak for dinner, rented some skis, and did some practice runs on the small slope in front of our chalets!
Vray Rhino WOrkshop
November 24, 2008
Today we worked with rhino and vray for rendering which was definitely very helpful. I am quite confident with modelling but not rendering so all hte work that goes into the modelling doesnt show when I render which is quite frustrating.
We worked on lighting, saving renders, and rendering using a pre-made 3d model of a house and things.
Here are the notes I managed to take while doing the workshop, they are a bit scattered but was a helpwork workshop.
VRAY FOR RHINO RENDERING-

infinite planE

vray options,
set it to default first

then render
looks bad
so settings
file load settings
GMC takes longer to render but is much better
but for now use this one

override output

check override, and chose a size. we will use 640×480
now camera
use these settings

now render

now light on right
rectanglular light

now rectangle light and can rotate and move etc

object properties while selected
click tab that says light

now do these settings invisible and double sided
now too bright

change the global illumination

still toobright

materialiality

make it white for simple white

add material right click on scene materials

make red

now assigning to objects. all materials need to be in the same layer. SAME MATERIAL SAME LAYER

objects with the same material need to be in the same layer.
so in this case, all the red is in the ‘wood’ layer. so y ou right click and properties. then select material then red.
now wood to the red material
click red then clikc the M next to red

then m next to clear
to browse
then select wood

now apply and render

now select object properties, then texture mapping

can change different aspects here and can view in veiwport if you select rendered view

END OF RENDERING VRAY WORKSHOP TUTORIAL.
Gianni Botsford Architects: Local Adaptation
October 17, 2008
gianni botsford came in last night for a lecture.
i really enjoyed this presentation. mostly because he got to the point of his projects and was able to talk about a range of projects even from his diploma project at the aa.
i also admired his fascination with light and lighting and was also a bit envious that he had a very strong starting point for each project. the idea of having a admiration for one aspect i think would be a helpful tool in designing. as when i am designing i always have a had time starting with an overload of information.
i was mostly interested in two of his projects. the light house and the casa kike. the light house was incredibly interesting as they mapped out the light using the computer to calculate where the sunlight would be the strongest to the lightest and used this to help start the organisation of the house.
the casa kike house made in cuba is a great project especially for the budget of 55,000. was build for his father and what i found most interesting is that they had to build each junction of timber in a model to show the detail to the builders. the drawings were not enough. and i bet working with these models made them alter the design as well. as looking at a prototype at 1:1 scale makes a huge difference especially when working with a computer or a computer model.
